Cry havoc and let loose the downtimes of war!
We’ve got downtimes open now – all of the commodities and previous downtimes are in there. So downtimes are now open until… 23:59:59 (not making that mistake again!) on Friday the 15th of January. Sometimes as a LARP organiser I get asked what people can do to make my job easier, and here’s what you can do – get downtimes in early so we can get a jumpstart on finishing them before Warpcon. Thankyou
In terms of whether or not you’re due a downtime, this is an experiment. If you have a login to the downtime system you’re due a downtime. We’ll see how that goes and whether or not we’re inundated with work.
And the Nick said “Let There Be Downtimes.” And Lo… there were downtimes.
Just to let you know what our plans are for next year. We’re now confirmed at Warpcon (which you know), Vaticon (1st-3rd of April 2016), and Hobocon (3rd-5th of June 2016.) The good folks at both Vaticon and Hobocon invited us, and who are we to say no? Hobocon will be the last game in what we think of as our “second season.” We’re holding back on blurbs a little now, so we can better react to what our players want to do, but as soon as we have them we’ll post them here.
Downtime update – some changes have been made to the downtime system. These will allow you to see your previous downtimes (at the moment you’ll see downtimes as far back as Vaticon’s game.) We’ve also added a “Commodity Transfer” page, which will allow you to transfer commodities between players in the downtime system. Downtimes after Beacon are NOT open yet. What needs to happen first is that all the character envelopes have to be opened and the commodities each player has need to be entered into the downtime system. Which is an arduous and boring task
We’ve been quiet for a couple of weeks while we wrote all the downtimes, and prepped the game for Beacon. And then we went up to Belfast, and we ran it. We had fun! It was a small game (roughly a third the size of our Gaelcon game) but everyone seemed to enjoy it. We’ve got a plan to throw recaps for both Gaelcon and Beacon onto the site at some stage, but if you’re curious Beacon’s game involved:
- A gunfight in Cargo Bay 14, and another in Cargo Bay 22.
- An execution in the brig.
- An honest-to-goodness blueprint for the new Super Shuttle (Iona is awesome.)
- Our very first Clen, and his plucky Xerra translator.
- The death of Uva (whose last words were “Uva is the friend of all Children of the Seed. Noooooooo!”)
Right now, we’re focussing on a few things Chez Team Midway. These are as follows:
- Downtime System: View Previous Downtimes (this is actually done and waiting to be deployed. Gotta keep up with the Joneses over at Academy of Eblana. Yes, this means you’ll be able to view your Gaelcon downtime when downtime opens for “after Beacon.”)
- Downtime System: Commodity Transfers.
- Downtime System: Bug Involving Combining Multiple Copies Of The Same Card.
- Website: Gaelcon/Beacon Recaps.
- Thinking/Planning: How to make the print/pack part of the process more efficient/cost-effective.
- Booking: Where will we be after Warpcon? The sneak preview news here is that we’ve been invited to a few cons, and we’re excited to keep doing Gilgamesh.
- Normal Operation: Obviously we need to open downtimes for after-Beacon (ideally after all the downtime items above are complete.)
I’d like to address all of those before Warpcon and we’ll probably post about each one in detail when it happens.
It’s my own fault for using the word “midnight” I guess.
For those that are confused, downtime will close at 23:59:59 on 10/11/2015. That is, today. As at the time of posting you’ve a little over thirteen hours to downtime in.
Downtimes are now open – HERE
There are some changes from last downtime. You’ll see a new “Train” activity for gaining hit points. You’ll see a new “ArmourUp” activity for gaining armour points. You’ll see some visual changes where the downtime site now shows you your hit points and armour, as well as your RPG stats (which will all be blank/zero for now.)
Sorry for the short period on this one… downtimes WILL CLOSE 10/11/2015 at midnight. So you have a little over a week.
If you have any questions/queries – as always – email@example.com. Thanks!
We have a frighteningly brief window between now and Beacon.
In short, we expect downtimes to open sometime at the end of the week, and close around a week later. We’d like to go faster, but we’d like to make some changes to downtime to make it a touch more flexible before we open it. In addition, we have a number of new users to add to the system. We’ll post here when it’s open, and give you a date when it will close.
Please please – support a new con in the country. The people running it are a superior class of people GO TO BEACON
Content update here today – in advance of Gaelcon’s double-bill of Gilgamesh (which in my head starts our second “season.”) Firstly, I’ve dropped up a quick recap for the episodes in Season One which you can find HERE. Secondly, the redoubtable Mister Dornan has written a very telling piece of flavour that tells us something about how the Flock think of the Gilgamesh. You can find that HERE.
We’re all likely to be quiet (ad really *really* productive) for the next week or so, but we’re looking forward to seeing the crew on the bridge again at Gaelcon. Happy Gaelcontober, everyone! They don’t call it Gamer Christmas for nothing!
Me and the rest of the guys have started using Slack for chatting about LARPs, LARPing, Gilgamesh and other Irish LARPs. It’s a messaging app that you don’t need to install an app to use (although you can if you want.) It’s drop-in, drop-out and can send you reminders if folk are looking for you when you’re not there. I created a chat channel for Gilgamesh this morning – come and join us if you’d like to chat!
Unfortunately, Slack is invite-only – drop me a line if you want in (firstname.lastname@example.org)!
(oh yeah – and downtimes close on midnight on the 18th. Srsly.)
The smell of Autumn is in the air and there’s a pleasant chill in the mornings. I’ve yet to see any frost on the car in the morning, but I don’t need that to know that it’s getting close to Gaelcontober! There’s chats and emails jumping between the team here, and we know pretty much what’s going to happen for our 6th game (comprising both the RPG and LARP, for the picky among ye.)
This means we need to close downtimes – I’ve been a bit remiss about being specific about the date for that, so allow me to remedy that. The deadline is midnight (Irish time, people) Friday 18th of September. All downtimes need to come via the online system – if you have a query about either your downtime or your access to the downtime system, send it to the email@example.com address, please. We tend to get back within a couple of days on queries, so if you haven’t heard back it’s likely because we don’t have your query. Resend. Via email. To firstname.lastname@example.org – no downtimes left behind!
Those of you who have big mad crazy plans in your downtimes can expect to be receiving “WTAF?” mails fairly soon.
Lastly, Please Note – I’m imposing the same deadline for new character creations as well. if you’ve got something new you want to play then we’d like to know. Downtimes submitted after the deadline had better have a damned good excuse or we just won’t bother
A while back you may remember I was asking people if they wanted to donate some fiction to Gilgamesh to serve as “flavour” for people to hang their game experience on. Siskey wrote us the amazing “Friends” (which you can find HERE.) What you won’t know is that he also wrote a story focussing on the media in Hoboville, which you can now find HERE! Personally I’m extremely impressed with both stories, and I owe Mr. Dornan a heartfelt thanks for making the Gilgamesh universe a little broader.
